I love this quote, it's so simple and pure. It inspires me and give me an encouragement in the small things I do for the Babies Home in Thailand.

When I visited the Phayathai Babies Home last year, I decided to carry on giving my profit contribution for this place. I can see that they are truly in need of help and donations. It is great to be able to go back this February for a visit again.

*(We are not allowed to take any close-up photos of the children in the room due to the children's rights protection law, just only of the places).

*This is the building for the toddlers group aged 1-2 years old.

I spent the morning playing with some orphans in one of the toddlers' rooms. They are about 1 and a half to almost two years old. Most of them cannot talk yet and have a slower development than average children. They ran to me and my friend wanting to be cuddled. We sat and played with them. Most of the children would cling to us for hugs or just love to sit on our lap all the time. We were asked to help feeding lunch to them as they cannot feed themselves yet and there are not enough staff to feed all the children in that room so any volunteers are greatly welcomed.

*The orphans spent their morning here and we also helped feeding them lunch here. Their cots are in the opposite room.

We left when it was their nap time and it was a sad parting, taking them back to their cots and waved goodbye. I can never forget those innocent sad eyes, their little hands that touch your face and their sweet heads resting on my shoulders. One of the boys held on so tight and would not let go when he knew I was leaving.

How did you come up with the name of your shop?
I chose the name ‘Pleasure’ because I started off making jewelry as a hobby and it gave me so much pleasure. When I set up my Etsy shop, I think about how when someone likes my jewelry and wears them, that give both of us pleasure. But the best pleasure of all is knowing that we are all doing a little something to help charities and give some pleasure in life to the orphans in Thailand.

Tell us a bit about your craft:
I love making jewelry with all kinds of beads, semiprecious stones, crystals and pearls. I am addicted to making earrings. I never seem to be able to stop making them. Maybe it’s because I find making earrings very therapeutic. If I don’t make them, I feel restless. I always like to play around with beads and put them together to see whether they will work and turn them into a nice pair of earrings.

What is the most difficult part of your craft?
It has to be to come up with something new and unique, to have the designs that you know they are your own and have your kind of style written all over them. Jewelry market is so saturated that whatever you create or design, there bounds to be something like that or something similar that have been done already.

What is the most costliest part of your crafting?
Semiprecious stones! I love them but I can't buy them very often as I run my shop mainly for the charity project, I have to be sensible with my materials and make sure I don't use something too costly and end up with something too expensive to sell. I try to use materials that will not cost too much so my jewelry will be affordable. The more customers support my charity project, the better contribution I can take back each year.

What kind of music do you listen to when you create?
My taste of music does not match my age. I am still young at heart! LOL! So I normally listen to today’s hits, hip hop and rock. I probably should not admit to this as it does not really reflect how it can be possible to churn out some jewelry that look so sweet, feminine and dainty when rock music is screaming in the background!

What has been your most successful marketing technique?
This is a difficult one. I haven't done anything much with marketing to be able to decide which is the most successful but I find being active in Etsy forum helps a lot. I have seen more sales when I promote more in the forum. You need to be seen and keep at it. It is a wonderful place to get to know other sellers and meet some new friends as well.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose? And why?
I have lived in Hong Kong most of my life. I moved here in 1986, left and went to live in England for a long while. We moved back again in 2000 and I would not want to go anywhere else. I love the vibrancy and the liveliness of this place. It is such an exciting city that never seems to sleep and it is pretty safe too. I can go to watch a film at midnight and come home alone with no problem at all. And the most important fact (for me) is that you can always go out and find something to eat 24 hours! There is always somewhere open for business! Having said that, I would love to live near a beach somewhere in Thailand too. It is such a beautiful country and Thai food is superb!

Where do you get inspiration from?
I would say I get my inspiration from my love for flowers. I enjoy having flowers in my garden and I try to have fresh flowers in the house most of the time. I love going to the flowers market. The varieties of colors and the beauty of flowers do give me some ideas most of the time. I love happy colors!

Do you know that two decades after the United Nations adopted a treaty guaranteeing children's rights, there is still one billion children deprived of food, shelter, clean water and healthcare – and the hundreds of millions more threatened by violence?

You may have heard or seen the pictures of these unfortunate children everywhere; children in Africa and Asia suffer the worst. More than nine out of ten children who are not attending school, who are malnourished, and who died before the age of five live in these two continents.

In Thailand, you see some of them begging in the streets or living rough. You hear of the horrendous news of those who are sold into child labor, being forced into prostitution or a life of crime.
There are a lot of homes and shelters for orphans and under-privileged children in Thailand. These places provide a safe and loving environment, a place they can have food, shelter, medical care and access to education.

As most of you who are familiar with my shop and my project know that starting from June 2008 I have set a personal goal to raise money with my handmade jewelry and donate it to a charity that helps orphans and under-privileged children in Thailand. I had made my first donation last year and decided that I will go back to the Babies’ Home again for this year’s donation. Meanwhile, I am searching and considering a few more orphanage and children's homes as well for the coming years.

I want to keep donating and help in a little way I can. Please help in your contribution for these places to continue their invaluable work. Help giving a child a chance in life.

I hope to visit the orphanage in February and will update here with all the details and photos.

Oh how we use colors to relate to our emotions!
I notice that whenever I feel really good, I'll wear clothes that are bright and bold and whenever I am feeling really down, I tend to reach for dark colors. It seems that we prefer to dress depending on the mood we have on a certain day.

We sometimes overlook the fact that colors affect our moods, emotion and physical states in so many ways. Walk into any kindergarten classrooms and most likely you’ll see a lot of bright colors on the walls. This is because these bright colors stimulate brain functioning and make learning more fun.

How can you use colors to change your mood? Well, clothing is the most obvious choice. What you wear not only helps you feel a certain way, but also can give a strong impression about you to others. It is summer time now in Hong Kong, the sun is shining brightly and all the flowers are out. I also just got back from spending a week in UK where the weather has been glorious too. I love summer, I love all things colorful. Whilst in England, I have made quite a few pairs of earrings that reflect my mood. They are all colorful, just like all those wonderful flowers I have seen everywhere at the moment!

It would be nice to hit the beaches somewhere soon with these earrings, don't you think?
We have planned a few beaches trips around Asia this July and August, Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Sanya in Hainan Island and Bangkok, Huahin and Phuket in Thailand. I hope to come back with more inspiration for my creations!

First of all, I would like the name of these earrings to convey that beautiful feeling of giving, caring and kindness we have in our hearts.
Secondly, why do I call this project “One Pair of Earrings – One Meal”?

I have made these 20 pairs of Flowers in your Hearts earrings especially for this project; the idea is to find 20 people who are willing to exchange one pair of earrings into a meal for the school for orphans in Thailand.

Love My Flowers

Winter has not been very kind to my flower beds. Though the rest of my garden seems to be reasonably healthy and thriving through the unpredictable winter we had this year, I lost almost all of my colorful flowers. I keep trying to replace a few of them each time they gave up as I like to work and look out to my garden and see some colorful pretties. However, it is a constant battle trying to keep some colors in the flower beds; I reluctantly turn a blind eye for a while. Needless to say, as it is getting warmer now, I am so delighted to see dots of colors starting to appear again. Some of these early flowers have inspired these pretties that will dangle beautifully to put you in the moods of spring and summer to come.

A Memorable Day!

MY VISIT TO THE ORPHANAGE!

February 17, 2009 is a memorable day for me! I did it! I have collected enough of Pleasurearts' profits to be able to give my first donation to the babies' home in Thailand. I travelled to Bangkok to visit my family and took the opportunity to go to the orphanage personally to donate the profits that I have been collecting since I started "Another Day in Paradise" Project idea in June 2008.

(Here are some of the photos I took while I was there on February 17, 2009. I am not supposed to take any photos of the orphans inside the buildings.)

( The buildings are all painted in all colorful and cheerful colors for the orphans.)

To go the Phayathai Home for Babies to see for myself and to have a chance to talk to the staff was really heart-wrenching. The orphanage is in desperate need for babies formula, diapers and babies cots. Upon walking around during my visit, it is very obvious that they are definitely understaffed and in urgent need of some necessities for the orphans.

( New stainless steel beds have just been donated by some kind-hearted people. These stainless steel babies beds are very expensive, so there are very few donated at the moment, they need some more of these as the ones they are using at the moment are old and made from cheaper quality material with paint. They are getting rusty and sometimes, the babies are teething on the railings and cots' bars which can be quite harmful as the paint peeled off!)

( Pregestimil babies formula, for babies who have digestive system problems. A lot of these abandoned babies never have a chance to be breast-fed by their mothers, let alone looked after properly before they get to the orphanage, so they are frequently ill or have some kinds of problems with their health!) Of course they are short of the regular babies formala as well.

( Toys and playground items seem limited and old.)

It has been less than a year since I came up with my personal " Another Day in Paradise" Project, today, I am able to donate 5000 baht to the Phyathai Babies Home. It may not seem much for some people in some rich countries but for Thailand it is a substantial amount to help with running the homes and buying some necessities for the orphans.

( An sign of urgent plea on the wall in Thai language asking for help in donating immediate necessities. Mainly babies formula, medicine for babies, diapers, baby powder, baby soaps etc.)

I left the orphanage feeling humble and helpless, my throat was choked and my heart felt tight. I dream that I can do more for all those orphans. I am just a little drop of water in the big ocean. What I am doing may seem small and insignificant to some, but I will continue to give half of my profits and the other half will go into materials to make it possible to keep giving what little support we all can years after years.

I would like to thank all my great customers whose kind support makes this possible. I am very proud to be able to achieve this together with you all. May you life be blessed and plentiful in every way. May peace and joy from your kindness fill your heart and your home.

I live in the country where almost everyone believe in good luck and prosperity in life and business. The first thing I noticed when I first moved here was that a lot of shops and restaurants we went to have this cute little cat in the window. They are meant for good luck and to bring in good business. The cat is normally has one paw up as the gesture to call customers in! Red is also consider an auspicious color. Every new year here everything is adorned beautifully in red.

These little glass chillies are definitely meant for good luck. I made them into a pair for each earring, so there you go....double luck!

As for the lucky cat, I don't think you need any more explanation, I think they can bring anybody luck just from their cuteness alone!

Girly and Cute!

There are times when I just want to create something cute and sweet for that sweet little girl inside me ( that never comes out)! I love Swarovski crystals but I have to try not to go too near to the supply shop too often. All the colors seem to call out from the shelves to me and I always end up taking a lot of them home.

I made these sparkly little pendants in the shape of mini- handbags.

They look lovely hanging on the suede cord necklace in matching color or black.

Some of these are sold already but I am making some more with different color combinations!

Playing with Wire!

I love working with silver wire, it takes good planning and concentration if you don't want to mess up and waste (most of) your materials. Always buy your sterling silver wire from a big reputable supply company to ensure that you really get the good quality, real sterling silver wire!

Silver wire can be quite expensive and I don't normally practice on the cheap wire first as any sensible people would. I just plan things in my head and set about making them so I have to be really cautious and precise before I start twisting and bending. It can potentially ends in tears!

My favourite would be the combination of silver wire and pearls. They compliment each other very well. I keep a large selections of pearls in all sorts of colors and sometimes it is nice to diverse from beads or semi-precious stones for a change.

Pearls are always elegant with any outfits but they don't always have to be formal, add a bit of fun and modern twist with these ones.

Beautiful Oriental Style Earrings

Oh How I Weave and How I weave!

I love working with threads and cords sometimes. I tend to alternate my method. If I get bored with the wire work or clay, especially if I just want to relax, take it easy and weave away, I will get out my bag full of silk, satin waxed cotton cords! It is quite relaxing to do macrame or kumihimo Japanese weaving. Most people will agree with me that it is quite therapeutic! I have done a lot of hemp and macrame jewelry but never have a chance to take decent photos of them yet.

Some of the macrame bracelet with semi-precious stones. The silk cords is used here, I love the silk cords as they give a beautiful sheen to the finished piece!

I hope you enjoy looking at them. They look really great when you put them on. I kept a pair for myself and they do cascade down beautifully! I was very pleased when I finished making these " babies" but even more satisfied with even better results when I wore mine.

Crazy about Earrings

Some of you may have heard about the legacy of a former first lady who left behind more than 2000 pairs of shoes when she fled the country after the big corruption scandal!

Well, I love as many pairs of shoes as the next girl but I am more crazy about earrings. Though I don't plan to leave behind as many as 2000 pairs or I don't really have an urgent need to flee my home yet (maybe soon, due to overflowing craft stock!), I have no qualm about making as many earrings as my heart desires.

The question is how many is too many. Just like they say one can never be too rich, I'll say I can never have too many earrings.

Sometimes I justify saying one pair a day for a year, so I can set on and keep on making my "babies".

365 pairs???? Not yet, but one d ay before I know it, it will be close. When you get so much pleasure and satisfaction out of doing something, why not? Why stop? This is not just a justification post. Let's have a look an d enjoy some of the near hundred pairs I created so far......

The fun side of me!
I made these tutti frutti earrings when I was in such a fun mood. Their colours made me happy. They are made with lucite beads and antique tone brass bead caps and findings for the vintage look. They are fun, colourful but at the same time I want them to look elegant. I have a lot of fun with my daughter giving them lovely names. They are really happy tutti frutti earrings. Semi-Precious Stone Pendants

I made a series of semi-precious stone pendants. They come with leather cord and all sterling silver findings. Some of them are sold but can be made to order if you are interested.

This one is made from moonstone and black obsidian, complimented with a beautiful silver bead.

This one is Tiger's Eyes and Black Agate. The leather cord is brown to compliment the color of the pendant!

I love this one, it has been sold but I plan to make another one soon! This is simple yet stunning, a lovely dark jade and red carnelian pendant. I like working with semi precious stones. I set up this project to help raise money for the homes and shelters for orphans and under-privileged children in Thailand.

Half of the profits from my CHARITY PROJECT SELECTION items from Pleasurejewelry will go towards brightening up the lives of orphans in Thailand. There are a number of homes and shelters around Thailand that need help in caring for orphans, underprivileged, abused or abandoned children.

These homes and shelters are often under-resourced. They have an ongoing need to help cover the costs of running the homes. When you support my project “Another Day in Paradise”, you are helping and extending your compassion and care to make a difference and brighten up the children’s lives.

I came up with this project to challenge myself to do some fundraising for homes and shelters for orphans in Thailand.

Children in these homes have very often had traumatic experiences that have led to them being there. Some are orphans - disease, accidents, or disasters like the 2004 Tsunami may have taken the lives of their parents. Some have been abandoned or have been taken into care to escape violence, prostitution, or extreme poverty. These unfortunate children come from hopeless, desperate and often life threatening situations. These children have experience what we can only imagine in our nightmares. This should not be the life of a child.

This is my pledge and my personal goal. Starting from June 2008 until December 2008, I aim to be able to raise some money and make the contribution towards the following:-

Each year from now, I will continue to challenge myself to raise more funds for different homes and shelters all over Thailand.

We are all so lucky to have family and friends, something that shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Making all these items for “Another Day in Paradise” project has given me great pleasure. I hope you will get the same pleasure from my handmade items as well as sharing the greater joy in supporting the fundraising to help these children.
